1950’s Actresses

Hi all! and welcome back to my third blog. Today I’m going to be talking about famous actresses from the 1950’s. The actresses I’m going to be focusing on are ‘Marilyn Monroe’, ‘Doris Day’, and ‘Grace Kelly’.

Marilyn Monroe (picture above) was known as a sex symbol throughout her career. Her well known movies were ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘The Seven Year Itch’. ‘The Seven Year Itch’ had a controversial review as one of the most famous scenes from that movie is when Marilyn Monroe is standing on top of a subway grate and the upward breeze blew up her dress in New York city. In ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ her famous scene from that movie was when she was singing ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ which Madonna later copied the video for her song ‘Material Girl’ which was released in 1985. ‘Some Like It Hot’ was one of her last films she did before she died in 1962.

Doris Day was a very elegant actor and was very well known in the 1950’s. She starred in films like ‘Calamity Jane’, ‘Love Me Or Leave Me’ and ‘Young At Heart’. ‘Calamity Jane’ is about a tomboy cowgirl played by Doris Day who ends up falling in love and learns a few lessons in being a lady. ‘Love Me Or Leave Me’ tells the story of Ruth Etting a jazz singer played by Doris Day and she’s married to a gangster who helped her reach stardom. ‘Young At Heart’ tells a story of Laurie Tuttle who’s played by Doris Day who grew up in a musical family with three sisters. Laurie is in a tough predicament when she has to choose between a bleak music arranger or a charismatic composer.
Grace Kelly was known as the Princess of Monaco and starred in a lot of Alfred Hitchcock films like ‘Dial M For Murder’, ‘Rear Window’ and ‘To Catch A Thief’. ‘Dial M For Murder’ is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous movies of all time. It tells the story of a tennis player who frames his wife for a first-degree murder after she unintentionally delays his plan to kill her. ‘Rear Window’ is about a photographer in a wheelchair who spies on his neighbours and becomes convinced that one of them has committed a murder. Then last but not least ‘To Catch A Thief’ tells a story about a jewel thief who is suspected of returning to his current trade when he must try and figure out who the real thief is to prove his innocence.
